Apps that use Layout
Some apps place restaurant orders through Layout. When one does, your Layout account does the paying: the app proposes an order, you approve the total, and Layout charges your card and pays the restaurant. The app never handles your card.
Approving an app
Layout, not the app, asks you. Texts come from Layout's own number, and if you did not ask for one, ignore it.
- A code to give the app. The app asks for your phone number and Layout texts you a code: "Layout: 123456 links this number to the app, which can then place orders for you." Giving the app that code connects it, and makes your Layout account if you did not have one.
- A link to approve. If you already have a Layout account, Layout may text you a link instead: "The app wants to place food orders for you through Layout. Tap to approve." The link is good for ten minutes.
- A Continue with Layout button in the app, which opens Layout's own sign-in page.
With a link or the button, you sign in to Layout and see a screen that says the app "will be able to place orders for you, paid with the card on file in your Layout account," and that you can disconnect it anytime in Layout. Tapping Allow is your agreement that it orders for you.
Layout shows an app's own name and logo only after it has reviewed and approved that app.
Adding your card
If your account has no card yet, the app sends you to a Layout page to add one. That page carries the app's name and logo and says the app "partners with Layout to place your orders, and never sees your card." The card is entered on Layout's page and saved to your Layout account. It never reaches the app.
Because the card belongs to your account and not to the app, you add it once. Every app you connect, and Layout itself, uses the same card. Manage it under Billing in your Layout account.
Confirming an order
The app shows you the store, the items and the total. Nothing is charged until you say yes. The total includes Layout's service fee, and Layout One removes that fee in apps too.
If nobody confirms a ready cart in the app, Layout may text you the cart, and you can reply YES to place it. Some apps turn that text off.
Your daily spending limit and the $50 ceiling per order apply to app orders exactly as they do anywhere else.
When Layout texts a code
Most orders need only your yes. Layout texts you a six-digit code when an order calls for one, and you give it to the app. The text names the total, the store and the card:
Layout: 123456 approves $12.34 at Cafe One on your Visa ending 4242. Sharing this code places the
order. It expires in 10 minutes. If you did not just order, ignore this text.
A code is asked for when a risk check calls for one, when a code is already out for that order, when the order is over the amount Layout allows without one, or when you connected the app without seeing the agreement above. In that last case the text also says that sharing the code lets the app place future orders without one, until you disconnect it.
A code works for one order at one amount. Only give it to the app you are ordering with.
What the app can see
The app sees the orders it builds for you and how they turn out. If you connected with your own Layout sign-in, it can also read the food preferences Layout applies to your orders. It never gets your card, and connecting does not give it your Layout sign-in.
Disconnecting an app
Open Access in your Layout account, on the web or in the iPhone app, and tap Disconnect next to the app. It stops at once: it cannot build or place orders for you until you connect it again. Your account, your card and your past orders stay yours.
