What Layout is

Layout is an ordering layer. Apps build on it so they can place real orders at restaurants for the people who use them. You keep one Layout account, which holds your card, your spending limit, your receipts and the list of apps allowed to order for you.

The best way to order with Layout is through an app built on it. You can also order yourself, in an assistant or directly with Layout.

How an order goes

1. Something asks for food

   You ask an app built on Layout, an assistant, or Layout itself for what you want, in your own words.

2. Layout builds the order

   It finds the location, opens the restaurant's current menu, and adds the items and options you asked for. The result is a real cart at a real price, built on the restaurant's own site.

3. You confirm the total

   You see the restaurant, the items and the total before anything is spent. Nothing is placed and nothing is charged until you say yes.

4. Layout places and pays

   Layout places the order and pays the restaurant itself. Your card is held for the total you confirmed, and the hold becomes a charge only once there is evidence the order went through.

Why it works at places that never heard of us

Layout does not need the restaurant to sign up or install anything. It uses the ordering site the restaurant already has, the same one you would use yourself. That is why the answer to "does it work at my spot" is usually yes.

It also means Layout is bound by what that site can do. If the restaurant does not sell something online, Layout cannot order it, and if their site is down, Layout tells you rather than guessing.

Where you can use it

• Apps built on Layout. Any app can add Layout through the developer platform. See apps that use Layout.

Wherever an order starts, it uses the same account, the same card and the same limits.

What it is not

It is not an autopilot. Layout never spends money without your confirmation, on every order, in every app. See confirming and paying for exactly what that covers.

• A card on that account before your first order is placed. You can see a few priced orders before adding one.
